6 April 2026 is the big one… and yes, the Countdown music is playing

Every time someone mentions 6 April 2026, I swear I hear the Countdown theme in my head — because the clock is very much ticking for SMEs.

This is not a small legislative tweak.
This is not a “we’ll deal with it later” moment.
This is the date everything changes.

And if you run or support an SME, you cannot afford to sleepwalk into it.

What happens on 6 April 2026?

A complete shift in how employers must handle absence, leave, and enforcement. The headlines:

1. Day one sick pay

No more waiting periods. No more “qualifying days”.
Employees are entitled to statutory sick pay from day one.

2. Day one paternity and parental leave

The old service requirements disappear.
New parents qualify immediately.

3. A brand new enforcement body

And it will have teeth.
This isn’t a passive regulator — it’s designed to actively enforce compliance across SMEs, not just large corporates.

The message from HR and employment lawyers is unanimous

I’ve spoken to colleagues, advisers, and legal partners across the sector and the warning is the same:

SMEs cannot afford to ignore this.

Not because the changes are complicated — but because they touch every part of your people processes.

A quick self‑check for SME owners

If you’re running a business, ask yourself:

  • Do your managers know what’s changing?
(Most don’t — and that’s where risk starts.)

  • Are your policies and contracts aligned with the new rules?
(If they still reference old qualifying periods, you’re exposed.)

  • Has payroll been briefed?
(Day one sick pay affects cost forecasting and payroll workflows.)

  • Are your onboarding and absence processes fit for purpose?
(If not, April will be messy.)

If you’re hesitating on any of these, breathe — there’s still time.
But the window is closing.
